[Liew Wei Qi] Comment on “Help old folk to age with dignity” by Blandina

Hi Blandina

I am also shocked by the mistreatment to the elderly patient. Their actions are indeed unacceptable and they should be punished for the way they had treated the elderly patient.
However, if we see from the caretakers’ point of view, it is tough for them to deal with the elderly patients. Some elderly patients have many needs that a caretaker must take care of. Example, caretakers have to feed them, bring them to the toilet, and if elderly patients peed on their beds, caretakers have to clean up the mess. Caretakers also have to be a listening ear to the elderly. Some caretakers are unable to cope with the daily needs of the elderly patients; hence they felt frustrated with their job.
But I agree that this isn’t a good reason for them to mistreat the elderly patients. I would suggest caretakers who could not cope with their job to take a short break, or even quit the job. It is better for them to quit the job rather than staying on as it will do no good to both the elderly patients and themselves.

Good job and keep up the great work.
