Hello Jia Jia.


I was appalled after reading the news article. The first question that rose up in my mind was: ‘How could anyone be as inhumane as Crawford?’ I think what she had done was a disgrace to humanity.

How could she pierce these poor animals? Animals do have their own rights just like humans. I do agree that Crawford does not have the rights to inflict the pain on the animals. She loves piercings but that does not mean that the animals love piercings too.

What’s worse was that she tried to remove the kitten’s tail by tying an elastic band to stern its blood flow. This is really barbarous of her. I agree that just merely six months of home detention is unquestionably not enough for her to reflect what she had done wrong.

Hello Wei Qi.

After I’ve read this news article, I was disgusted by the man who had performed the indecent act. The girl was also partly at fault as she could choose not to listen to the man. Peer pressure through internet is not as pressuring as face to face peer pressure. She could easily not obey what the man had asked her to do since he could cause her no harm through the Internet. When the man had suggested for a meet up, she could reject him and not turn up.

I agree that children are vulnerable towards the Internet. They should be taught in school the dangers and ways of protecting themselves. The assembly programs should be interesting and exciting, attracting their attention so that they would remember better. Parents should monitor their children's action.

The National Service man should be punished severely. It is a disgrace to humanity that such people that abuses little girls do exist. The government should punish him severely so that no other man would dare to commit the same crime again.

'German TV show mocks Singaporean practices' by KaiYan



I disagree with this article. This article is about a German television program that had made fun of Singaporeans’ behavior. It says that Singaporeans are strange human beings that enjoy getting their temperature checked. I do not find it strange as it is a safety measure to prevent the spread of fever to others. Singaporeans are being considerate and not strange as they are willing to check their temperature before entering the building.

The possession of chewing gum is forbidden all over Singapore, this is a waste prevention measure. It is a successful measure as Singapore is considered one of the cleanest cities in the world. So I don’t think by forbidding chewing gum is futile. Instead, I think it is very reasonable.
People in different countries have different beliefs and hobbies. We should respect it even if it sounded strange to us. This television program is making fun of some of the Singaporeans whom believed that songbirds bring luck to its owners. Songbirds are very expensive and so are the cages. They think that Singaporeans are strange to buy it at such an expensive price.
I believe that every country do have people that believe in the existence of spirits, including Germany. I don’t think that they should make fun of the Singaporeans that believe in it. I don’t think that this television program should be broadcasted in Germany as it would mislead the people who have watched it.

'Unmanned checkpoint booth confuses S'poreans' by KaiYan

I think the behaviors of some Malaysian immigration officers are absurd.


Two female Singaporeans were blackmailed, forced to sign documents, stripped naked and made to do ten squats. They were then detained in a place infested with pest. I find that the treatment they received is really unfair. What had happened was that they assumed that the thumbprint system was ahead and they drove on, but there was none. It was not their fault that the booth was unmanned. They were honest to make a U-Turn back to the custom to have their passport stamped. However, they were accused of illegal entry to Malaysia. The inhumane officers then made them do the unreasonable things as mentioned.


Another two Singaporeans went to Malaysia. The immigration officer sat in the booth with the lights turned off. The officer allowed them through without stamping their passports. Thinking that there is another booth ahead, they drove on.  When they have reached Singapore’s custom, they were advised by the Singapore immigration officers to return to Malaysia’s custom to have their passports stamped. Fortunately, both the Singaporeans were unpunished.


I think that the Malaysian government should be held responsible for the two absurd cases mentioned. The government should punish those unreasonable immigration officers severely. What they have done is unforgivable and unreasonable. They should also train the other staffs professionally to prevent the same situation from happening again in future. If this were to continue, many Singaporeans would be unreasonably punished for something they were not at fault.

"Are Singaporean Youths Politically Apathetic" by KaiYan

I don’t think that Singaporean youths are politically apathetic. General Election (GE) 2011 was significant to me. In the past, I would rarely attempt to watch the news. But during the GE period, I would watch the news almost every day to be updated about the GE news. It had been a hot topic among Singaporeans, including the youths. My friends and I had also discussed on the election issues as well. There are many interesting candidates like Low Thia Kiang, Nicole Seah and Tin Pei Ling; this year’s GE was more exciting than ever. The young candidate, Nicole Seah caught my attention. The way she speaks, whether during rallies or during interviews, brings across the message that she just wants the best for Singaporeans. She is able to convince people with the way she speaks.

Yes I think that GE will affect those who are under the voting age. There is a chance that the MP of the area will change. It might change the system of that area, affecting the youths. I think the voting age should be lowered from 21 to 18 to engaged youths in politics. They would be more aware of the things happening around them as they have a part to vote. There are many sources that have information regarding the GE like the Internet, newspaper and television. Youths could easily grab hold of the latest news feeds.

I think there should be a news channel on famous social websites like Facebook and Twitter. Since youths visit these websites often, it is easier for them to be updated on the latest news feeds thus, more engaged in politics.

"New Media Manners" by KaiYan

I think that only the minority do not mind their manners as much nowadays because of social media. Sending an SMS to inform your friend that you will be late isn’t impolite. Of course it is better to call but sending a SMS is good enough. Majority of the people do take note of what is right and what is wrong to do on Facebook. People should not post things that are offensive to their friends on Facebook or Twitter, as this would hurt their friendship.
Declaring your love or breaking up with your partner on Facebook, twitter or through SMS is also not acceptable. This would show that you are insincere and do not have the guts to tell the person face to face. When you are out with your friends, it is okay to use Facebook, Twitter, SMS or email but not too often. Students should also not use mobile phones during lesson time as he/she might not be able to pay attention in class.
It is only acceptable for the boss to send a text message late at night if it’s regarding important matters. If your boss wants to be your friend on Facebook, you should accept it. Personally, I would not mention any work related things on Facebook to avoid any conflict. Employees should not use mobile phones during meetings as it is very rude to the speaker. It would also affect the employee’s performance as he/she did not pay attention to what was mention in the meeting.

"Sloppy in Singapore" by KaiYan

I think Singaporeans should feel comfortable in the clothes they wear. Although some people might think that the way we dress is sloppy, it is important that we feel comfortable. The t-shirt, shorts and slipper trend could be because of the humid weather. Singaporeans might choose to dress comfortably rather than properly as they might sweat very often.For instance, polytechnic students dress in a variety of ways for school. Some wear t-shirts, shorts and slippers; while others prefer t-shirts with jeans and sneakers. The difference in the students’ attire show how different students find different attire comfortable.


Although feeling comfortable is important, they should dress properly when attending important events like wedding ceremony and job interview. To dress up properly is a form of respect to the host of the event. It shows that you respect the event and would spend time to dress up yourself. Dressing properly for job interview is important. The interviewer would have a better impression on you thus giving you a higher chance of clinching the job. Not all Singaporeans dress sloppily as some even take time to dress up even though they are only going to a shopping mall nearby to grab some food.


I think Singaporeans should dress up comfortably and appropriately depending on where they are going and wad events they are attending.
