[Liew Wei Qi] Comment on “Thai teen’s family sues SMRT for $3.4m” by Farwizah

Hi Farwizah

I agree that suing SMRT for three million and four hundred thousand dollars is too much. Both the teenager and SMRT have to take half of the responsibility for this incident. SMRT must take the responsibility for not building safety barriers on every MRT station. And for the Thai teen, she must take the responsibility of not standing far behind the yellow line. Although the real reason was never stated why the teenager fell onto the MRT tracks, but I believe it is because she did not stand far behind the yellow line. If she had stood far behind the yellow line, even if she had fainted or someone had pushed her, the Thai teen would not have fallen onto the tracks.

Singaporeans had donated a huge sum of more than four hundred thousand dollars to the Thai teen and SMRT had donated five thousand dollars for the incident. The Thai teen’s parents should be grateful for the kind act instead of asking more reimbursement. I do agree they will need more money to pay for prosthetic limbs, but they should ask for the adequate amount for each change of limbs instead of asking for the amount of money needed for her lifetime in one go. The Thai teen’s parents might abuse the use of the large sum of money given to them.

Good job and keep up the great work.

Wei Qi
