“Man admits to indecent acts with girl, 12” by Liew Wei Qi

I was shocked to know that a twenty-year-old National Service man performed indecent acts with a girl who is only twelve-year-old. From the article, it was known that the two met on the Internet six months before the man persuaded her to send him a naked picture of herself.
This show how dangerous the Internet is and how vulnerable children are towards peer pressure. The advance in technology means that the Internet will become an important part of our lifestyle. People will access to the Internet for education, work, or even leisure. Hence young children should be taught in schools the dangers of using the Internet, ways of protecting themselves on the Internet and proper Internet etiquettes. Parents must guide their children when they are using the Internet. Children do not know the true colours of people they met on the Internet and whether they are dangerous.
The girl was a victim to the Internet. Things would have been different for her if she had known basic cyber awareness. The government and schools in Singapore should learn from this incident. To increase cyber awareness to children as young as seven-year-old, primary schools can conduct assembly programs that teaches children that the Internet can be harmful and that they should not prioritise time spent online over time spent on studies. I hope that no more of such incidents will take place as it is sad to see young children falling victim through the Internet.
